The 8th October earthquake rocked most of the Kohistan areas, particularly thePalas Valley. As a result of this majority of infrastructure
has been demolished including loss of human lives, livestock, damages to agriculture field terraces, irrigation channels, bridges, houses and the main interior bridlepaths.
In order to respond to this natural disaster different international, national and local governmental and non-governmental organizations
came in front and started relief work to help out the victims and protect the people from severe winter.
The massive rescue operation was carried out, including evacuation of injured people from interior valleys, construction of winterized
shelters, food, winterized kits and medical treatment of injured.
In the rehabilitation phase, the priorities of the relief and rehabilitation steps have been undertaken which include, repair of roads,
pathways, bridges, houses, restoration of water supply schemes, compensation and restocking for livestock damages (being the
backbone of thelocal economy), terracing of agriculture fields, repairingof hydropower schemes and other infrastructure.
It was a historic relief operation and unique example of collaboration of the international, national, regional and local governmental, nongovernmental
agencies with the local communities and CBOs. Different agencies have been operational in the area having their specific
relief priorities, include World Food Programme, Malteser International, Oxfam, World Vision, Catholic Relief Services, German Agro-
Action, World Pheasant Association, UN-Habitat, International Rescue Committee, BirdLife International, NWFP Wildlife Department,
Lasoona, Sarhad Rural Support Programme, Palas Conservation and Development Federation and World Wide Fund for Nature
Pakistan.
InterAgenciesCoordinationForum(IACF):
WWF-Pakistan realized that there should be a platform to bring all the agencies around the table and to share their agenda of work with
other agencies, with the local people, District Reconstruction Unit and Earthquake Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Authority. Hence
Inter Agencies CoordinationForum(IACF) was established in mid of 2006. The IACF holds its monthly meetings to oversee the pace of the
relief work in Kohistan.
WWF-Pakistan was unanimously declared as “focal point” for bringing agencies together and decision making for
streamlining of the activities.
