The project intends to conserve the moist temperate forests
of Palas valley through introducing the concept of managing
the various non-timber forest products found in Valley. The
project is working with the communities of the Valley through
Palas Conservation and Development Federation, commonly called
PCDF, formed during Palas Conservation and Development Project
(PCDP). PCDF is a representative body of Palasi community at
the Valley level with a network of 47 Community-based organizations
(CBOs) and three interest groups in Lower and Upper Palas. The
project mainly focuses on the community living in biodiversity
core zones identified under the Natural Resource Management
Plan previously called Working Plan.
The project is funded by EU/UNDP under Small Grants Programme
(SGP) to Promote Tropical Forests (PTF) in Pakistan and is being
implemented jointly by The World Pheasant Association; popularly
know as WPA - Pakistan and NWFP Wildlife Department. The project
is being run by a Project Coordinator based at Conservation
Center in Serghazi Abad, the gateway of Palas valley, Tehsil
Palas, District Kohistan.
The project has the following objectives

of effective NTFPs collection, processing and marketing;
2. To develop capacity of Palasi people to manage NTFPs through
effective collection, processing and marketing;
3. To demonstrate the benefits of effective management of
NTFPs in the Valley;
4. To decrease disturbance to the local biodiversity from
NTFPs collection;
5. To establish a community -based monitoring and evaluation
mechanism in the Valley; and
6. To establish a long-term support and monitoring system
at the Valley level.
